Like any other Muslim and Islamic country Ramadan is celebrated with many rituals and traditions in Pakistan. As we know Pakistan is among some of the biggest and most important Muslim countries of the world so the month of Ramadan holds social, religious and spiritual importance in Pakistan. Muslims in Pakistan start observing fast after the announcement of first moon sighting of the Ramadan by Moon Sighting Committee of Pakistan. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic Lunar Calendar that brings a holy and pious month for the Muslims during which they have to abstain from eating, drinking and physical relations from the sun rise to the sun set for certain number of calculated hours. Most of the Muslims in Pakistan spend the holy month of Ramadan in fasting and praying. In addition to five essential prayers of the daily routine Muslims in Pakistan perform a special prayer along with the Isha prayer and this special prayer is known as Taraveeh that involves recitation of the Holy Book of Allah the Holy Quran.

In Pakistan the month of Ramadan is celebrated more like a festival as this is the Islamic month for which the Muslims of Pakistan look forward the entire year. There are different rituals to be followed such as giving alms and zakats to the needy and poor people.

Sehri during Ramadan in Pakistan

Sehri is the meal that all the Muslims observing fast have before the sun rise for the support for rest of the day. Sehri is usually a light meal such as roti, yogurt, cereal along with some curry.

Iftari during Ramadan in Pakistan

Iftari is the time of evening meal that is eaten after the sun set at the time of the breaking of the fast. The iftari is usually a lavish meal including delicious and spicy food for the contentment of hunger and thirst of the entire day.

Social Life during Ramadan in Pakistan

As describe before Ramadan is just celebrated as a festival in Pakistan. People love to gather with each other at iftar parties and invite each other for dinners at iftar. Moreover alms and edibles are also shared with people to celebrate the true spirit of Ramadan. People also refrain from all the social and moral ills during the month of Ramadan as Prophet Muhammad’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said

“ Allah has no need for the hunger and the thirst of the person who does not restrain from telling lies and acting on them even while observing fast.”

Professional Life during Ramadan in Pakistan

As Pakistan is an Islam State the rule and regulations associated with Ramadan are strictly followed in the organizations and offices. Working hours are reduced and it is made sure that everybody can enjoy iftar with their family. In addition to that government also offers relief to the citizens by offering edibles at a low and cheap price.
